Calls for windfall tax to be scrapped as oil firm to leave North Sea

The Chancellor confirmed at the recent budget the levy would increase by 3%.

An energy industry body has warned that the next six months will shape the success of North Sea oil “for decades to come”.

It comes as US oil firm Apache said it would end production in the North Sea in the next five years.

The Texas-based business said the windfall tax had made operating in the region ‘uneconomic’ and had resulted in an ‘onerous financial impact’.

Tonight, one business group says it must act as a wake-up call to the UK Government to reverse the changes to the levy.
