Opposition parties and campaigners have for weeks been calling on a windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas firms to help reduce bills. The chancellor has so far resisted those calls but with pressure mounting a group of energy firms have today written to him and the Prime Minister warning of the damage it could do to investment and jobs.
But environmental groups say with the coming energy price increase a windfall tax is the ‘economically rational’ thing to do. Steven Brown reports.
