Call for all new-borns to be tested for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Babies are only tested for SMA if they have an elder sibling with the condition, or if they show symptoms

There are calls for a campaign to test all new-borns in Scotland for a rare debilitating condition which affects an estimated 1 in 10,000 babies in the UK.

It’s not possible to cure Spinal Muscular Atrophy, but treatments are available to manage symptoms – although the longer the condition is left untreated, the more severe it can get.
