Breast cancer genes 10x more likely with Orkney heritage

Funding has now been provided so that those in Westray can test for the gene

Genes that cause ovarian and breast cancer in women are 10 times more likely to be found in those with an ancestral link to the island of Westray in Orkney than those in the rest of Scotland.

Scientists at Edinburgh and Aberdeen universities have been looking at the prevalence of the cancer causing gene BRCA 1.

It’s hoped that cancers will be detected and treated early as a result.
