Alcohol related deaths rise to highest number since 2008

People from the most deprived areas were 4.5x more likely to die than from the least deprived.

1,277 people died from an issue related to alcohol in Scotland over the last year – the highest total since 2008.

People in the most deprived areas continue to be the most likely to die due to alcohol addiction, while the number of people dying over the age of 65 is the highest since records began 30 years ago.

The overall number has increased by just one – but experts say a significant increase in investment and bespoke support is needed to tackle the wider issues behind the rising trend.
