40% of women have abortions due to childcare costs finds report

The research pointed to a lack of consistency in childcare delivery across the country

“I fell pregnant again, I knew I couldn’t afford childcare, I had to end my pregnancy” – the heart breaking story of a woman who has told STV news she is one of the 40% of women having abortions because they cannot afford the childcare costs that come with another child.

It comes as new research has laid bare the rising and challenging costs of parenthood across the country.

In a survey by the group “Pregnant Then Screwed”, 84% of parents say their childcare costs the same or more than their income – meaning some are effectively paying to go to work.

And more than 40% of parents say that they have had to rely on some form of debt or withdraw money from their savings to pay for childcare.
