Scotland’s World Cup fate will be revealed next week, with the national team confirmed in the third group of seeds after FIFA finalised the details of the draw for the finals.
Representatives of all 48 participating teams will gather in Washington DC for the draw ceremony on December 5, where the draw for the group stage, and the potential road to the final for each side, will be revealed.
Scotland are in seeding pot 3 for the draw and face a vast range of potential opponents in what is the biggest World Cup yet.
Steve Clarke’s side are guaranteed to face one of the three hosts: Mexico, Canada and USA, or one of the nine highest-ranked sides in the world from the top group of seeds.
Reports had suggested that steps were to be taken to put each of Europe’s qualification group winners, including Scotland, into separate groups but there is no mention of that in the details released by the world governing body.
Instead there’s an explanation that one team from each seeding pot will go into each of the 12 groups. Steps will be taken to ensure that no more than two European teams will be in each group, and no more than one from any other federation.
The updated match schedule, including the stadium assigned to each match and the respective kick-off time, will be confirmed on Saturday, December 6.
Scotland qualified for their first World Cup finals since 1998 after a stunning 4-2 win over top seeds Denmark at Hampden last week.
