Work begins to upgrade Scotstoun Stadium for next year's Commonwealth Games

Glasgow is hosting the event for the second time in just over a decade.

Work is under way to upgrade Scotstoun Stadium ahead of next summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The city is hosting the event for the second time in just over a decade after the original host – Victoria in Australia – pulled out.

Taking place between July 23 and August 2 next year, the games will feature around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations.

The work at Scotstoun, home of the Glasgow Warriors rugby team, has been described as a “significant milestone”.

An existing athletic track and temporary stands at either side are being removed, and a new surface will be laid over the next three months.

Glasgow last hosted the games in 2014, in what was widely seen as a major success.

However, next summer’s event will be a scaled-down version due to the short notice to prepare, with confirmation only coming at the end of last year.

Ten sports will take place across four venues – Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena, and the Scottish Event Campus.
