What are the changes to the laws of football coming to Scotland?

The head of referee operations at the Scottish FA has given an update on changes to the laws of football and how they will be applied in Scotland.

Some of these changes are those that spectators will have already witnessed at the FIFA World Cup.

One of the major changes affects a second yellow card for a player who is sent off.

If it is deemed by VAR that this was an incorrect call and the player shouldn’t have received a second yellow card, then it should be rescinded and the player is not sent off.

At Scotland’s national stadium, the head of referees, Willie Collum, spoke about changes that would speed up the game.

For example, if a player is being subbed, that player has ten seconds to come off the pitch.

If they deliberately take longer, 15, 20 seconds or so, then the oncoming player must wait a minute before coming on to the field of play.

There will also be a five-second limit for a throw-in. But Collum said that common sense will be applied so teams won’t be punished for taking six or seven seconds.

If however, you’re deliberately taking a long time to take a throw-in, you will be penalised. This could mean the throw-in will go to the opposition side.

Another change means that if a player receives medical treatment on the pitch for a foul, then that player must leave the field of play for a minute, unless the player from the opposing team who caused the foul is either booked or red-carded.

The changes are to come into force this season.
