Che Adams believes Scotland’s victory in Greece on Thursday gives the team valuable momentum ahead of Sunday’s decisive match at Hampden.
The national team hold a 1-0 lead after the first leg of their Nations League play-off tie thanks to Scott McTominay’s first-half penalty in Athens. That means a draw or better in the second leg will guarantee a League A place for their next appearance in the competition.
The win follows victories over Poland and Croatia at the end of last year and means Scotland are building a head of steam at an important time.
“It’s what the gaffer has always said, that momentum [is important],” Adams said. “Keeping in the game and staying in the game, having something to take back to Hampden is good for us and we can build off that now.
“It’s positive, it gives us something to build on now going back to Hampden.”
Scotland showed attacking intent and defensive resilience as they pushed for their goal before weathering a storm from a determined home side.
“It’s a bit frustrating how we didn’t impose ourselves in the second half but we dug in and we got the result in the end,” Adams admitted.
“We had a few chances. I had two chances that I probably should have scored and made it a bigger gap.
“We dug in towards the end, got the win, and that’s all that matters.
“The second half we defended so well but the first half we attacked so well and it kind of balanced out.”
The striker has no doubts about the rewards on offer for completing the job, saying the prize of staying in the top tier of the competition is an important one.
“It’s a challenge, obviously, coming up against better teams, better players but it tests us all the time,” he said.
“We lost a few games in the league so that’s something we can build on and look to improve next time.
“We’re getting better and better every campaign so hopefully we’ll finish this off strongly and stay in League A.”
