Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is not resigned to losing key defender Connor Goldson, saying the club are still holding talks over a new contract.
Goldson’s current Ibrox deal expires at the end of the season, with the centre-back free to talk to other clubs about a pre-contract deal from January.
Discussions between Rangers and the player’s representatives have been ongoing for some time without reaching a deal, but Van Bronckhorst said that didn’t mean the player had rejected an offer to stay beyond the summer.
The Dutchman said Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson was still working on an agreement.
“I spoke to Ross about it today and he‘s still talking with his agent,” van Bronckhorst said.
“Nothing to say. He’s still speaking terms with his agent so we have to wait.
“They are talking. I saw reports that he rejected an offer but that’s untrue. They’re still talking and hopefully we can have some more news in the coming weeks or months.”
Van Bronckhorst was appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor three weeks ago and has led the team to three wins in that time. He said that settling into the job and dealing with the games meant that he had not had a chance to speak to Goldson himself about his future.
He said that he wasn’t in a position to give an idea of how likely it was that Goldson would sign a new deal.
“I don’t have a clue because I’ve only been here for a couple of weeks,” he said.
“It’s always the case when you have players going out of contract at the end of the season but really I don’t have a clue what will happen.
“Maybe when I talk to Connor myself in the coming days or weeks then I’ll have more of a view on that but so far I don’t have anything to say on that matter.”
