Vaclav Cerny insisted Rangers have to find a way – any way – to start winning on their William Hill Premiership travels after title hopes were further decimated with a 1-1 draw against Dundee on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Czech Republic winger, on loan from Wolfsburg, scored his 11th goal of the season to cancel out the sixth-minute opener from Oluwaseun Adewumi, but Philippe Clement’s side could not go on to find a winner, leaving them with just three wins from 11 league matches away from Ibrox.
Rangers finished the game 15 points behind leaders Celtic and with their fans venting their frustrations at Clement and the players.
Ahead of the home game against St Johnstone on Sunday, Cerny addressed the away-day problem which has cost the Govan side the chance to realistically wrest the title back from their Old Firm rivals.
He said: “It’s all up to us. We are the ones who are dropping points. We are the ones who are not consistent and we need to get it right because the potential, the will, the ambition is there.
“It’s just about winning more and especially in those away games.
“It doesn’t matter how, just win those games.
“It’s tough for all of us. But, we showed already that we can come back to win games and we’re in that position again.
“We’re not losing them, but we’re not winning them.
“So, again, it’s tough but we’ve got to stick together.
“The motivation (now) should be to try to win every single game, which is possible.
“We’ve been close in every single game to win all of them and to be the best we can as we showed in the big games in Europe, (with) consistency and drive to be as good as possible every time.
“I think we are all well prepared for all of those games.
“We know what we want to do, but it just hasn’t come our way for the past games.
“So, as I say, we need to stick together, work harder and go back to winning those games.”
The former Utrecht and Ajax player does not believe a change of mentality is needed away from home.
He said: “No. It might look like that because we’re just not winning those games and I understand that question.
“But obviously you also miss a bit of luck, sometimes decisions are against us – it’s all OK because it’s part of the game.
“So it’s not that, it’s just us, us, us. Focusing on us and showing the mentality that a Rangers squad should have.”
Cerny hopes to get the supporters back on side against the league’s basement boys.
He said: “It would be amazing to feel that they are behind us.
“But, also it’s understandable that they are obviously not and we all get that.
“And believe me, that’s another motivation to get this club united with the fans, every three days that we play or every single week or whatever you want to say – it’s my big wish and it’s our big wish to try to do that.”
