US investors given tour of Ibrox as they close in on Rangers takeover

Insurance firm owner Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, the Leeds United chairman, were among those spotted on Tuesday.

A group of US investors closing in on a takeover of Rangers were given a tour of Ibrox on Tuesday.

Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises have been in talks with Ibrox chiefs since late 2024 about acquiring a controlling stake in the club, it emerged in February.

A statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of Rangers and the consortium interested in acquiring control of the club indicated that a deal was edging closer.

The leaders behind the takeover have now been spotted on a tour of Ibrox as they close in on completing the deal.

American insurance firm owner Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, the Leeds United chairman and head of investment for the San Francisco 49ers American football franchise, were among those in Govan taking in the stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Leeds technical director Gretar Steinsson also appeared to be among the group, which was being led by Rangers chairman Patrick Stewart.

The buyout would see 51% of the club acquired by the American consortium, and parties hope to complete the deal before the end of the season or during the summer, STV News understands.

A statement from the club last week read: “Rangers and its existing controlling shareholders are in productive conversations with the two lead members of the Consortium, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group, about the potential for the Consortium to acquire control of the club and to inject additional capital.

“These discussions reflect a shared recognition of the importance of Rangers FC’s long-term direction, ambitions and management.”
