Tartan Army in Boston: 6.30am bagpipe wake-up call, beer running dry and soaring temperatures

Boston has turned dark blue as Scotland fans arrive in their droves for their first match against Haiti

The Tartan Army have arrived in their droves in Boston for the World Cup.

The city has turned dark blue as tens of thousands of Scots have taken over ahead of Scotland’s opening game against Haiti at Boston Stadium on Sunday.

Steve Clarke’s men, at their first World Cup since 1998, then take on Morocco at the same venue five days later.

After being piped on their travels from Edinburgh, fans drank flights dry, with reports of airlines running out of beer at 40,000 feet.

The party has already started in Massachusetts, with fans descending on the streets and lining pubs and bars.

Fans piled into the Haven, Boston’s only Scottish bar, to drink pints of Tennents and listen to a live band.

They even gave the Americans a unique wake-up call.

Boston resident Mike Morrison was quickly acquainted with the Scots after they arrived across the street at their accommodation, and were out playing the bagpipes at 6.30am.

They decked out the apartment in Saltires, and the video of their morning wake-up call has been viewed more than five million times on X.

Mike even admitted he was resisting the temptation to go and join the group for a beer.

Scotland fans might be more tempted than usual to enjoy a tipple amid soaring temperatures.

Visitors are facing 31C temperatures, with the heat expected to continue into Saturday.

STV meteorologist Sean Batty said: “Well, it’s definitely going to be warmer there than it is here – although that wouldn’t be difficult given we’re only seeing temperatures in the mid-teens for most of this week!

“In fact, much of the US is set to warm up significantly as tropical air pushes northwards. By the end of the week, temperatures in Massachusetts could reach the low 30s, and because the air mass has tropical origins, humidity levels are likely to be quite high as well.

“For the Haiti game itself, there’s a chance of some showery rain. Temperatures will have eased back from daytime highs in the 30s to somewhere in the low-to-mid 20s by kick-off, which will still feel very warm to us Scots!

“The Morocco game is still a little too far away for detailed forecasts, but at this stage it doesn’t look quite as hot. Even so, temperatures could still reach the high 20s – conditions that are more familiar to Morocco than to us. There is some potential for rain, but for now the chances look fairly low.

“The Miami game will almost certainly be the hottest and most humid of the lot. The one saving grace is that we’re not there for the opening game, as this weekend currently looks very thundery, with temperatures hovering around 30C both day and night!”

Meanwhile, Scotland fan Craig Ferguson, who walked more than 3,000 miles across the US to raise £1m for mental health charity SAMH, broke down in tears after reaching his target.

He set off from Los Angeles in February, and on Thursday, John Swinney announced the Scottish Government had pledged £400,000 for the ‘Tartan Trek’ campaign.

The fundraiser had previously raised around £300,000 and has now surpassed its £1m target.
