Steve McLaren out of the running for Dundee United job

The former England manager had been in the frame to succeed Robbie Neilson.

Steve McLaren will not be the next manager of Dundee United after turning down the opportunity to continue talks with the club.

The former England manager was among the frontrunners to take over at Tannadice after Robbie Neilson left the club to rejoin Hearts.

But McLaren is not pursuing the opportunity to manage in the Scottish Premiership.

The Englishman, who took Middlesbrough to the UEFA Cup final and also managed FC Twente, Newcastle United, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers, has been out of work since March 2019 and was linked with managing Hearts before Daniel Stendel was appointed last season.

United will now turn their attention to other candidates, including Scottish FA performance director Malky Mackay.

The governing body have allowed United to speak to their employee about returning to club football for the first time since being sacked by Cardiff City over a series of text messages that contained discriminatory language.
