Watch again: Steve Clarke faces the media after naming Scotland squad

Clarke has named an initial 28-man squad and will cut two players by the June 7 deadline.

Steve Clarke has revealed his initial Scotland squad for this summer’s European Championships.

The national team boss has picked 28 players that will be whittled down to 26 following the friendlies against Gibraltar and Finland.

The roster is expected to be announced at around midday on Wednesday before the final squad is revealed on June 7.

Clarke will then face the media to explain his choices as preparations for Germany begin to reach fever pitch.

Scotland will take on the hosts in Munich in the opening game of the tournament on June 14.

They have already been dealt a blow with the news that Lewis Ferguson, Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson will be missing through injury.

So all eyes will be on who the right-backs are, as well as which goalkeepers will make the cut with Angus Gunn, Craig Gordon, Liam Kelly and Zander Clark all vying for a place on the plane.

Another big talking point will be if Celtic’s James Forrest, who hasn’t played for the national team since the last Euros, will be picked after returning to form to play a starring role in the Premiership title run-in.

In 2021 Clarke included the likes of uncapped youngsters Patterson, Billy Gilmour and David Turnbull in his 26-man squad and he could go down the same route again.

Other than that, the big hitters from the qualifying campaign including captain Andy Robertson, John McGinn, Callum McGregor, Kieran Tierney, Gilmour and Scott McTominay are all certain to be included.

Following the game against Germany, Scotland will take on Switzerland and Hungary as they bid to make the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time in history.
