Robinson waiting on three loan deals as St Mirren look to strengthen

The manager is hopeful he can bring in new faces over the next week.

Stephen Robinson has revealed that he is hopeful of completing three loan deals to strengthen his St Mirren squad.

The Buddies’ boss is looking to turn around his side’s current run of four successive defeats and put the side back on track for a third successive top-six finish in the Premiership.

He’s optimistic that bringing in new faces before the end of the January transfer window can help the team get back to winning ways and says he’s hoping for positive news on a trio of signings from clubs north and south of the border.

“We’re actually waiting on three deals, all loan deals,” Robinson said.

“You’re always at the mercy of the parent club at bigger levels. We’re doing the same, holding some players back to make sure we get what we need. Everybody is doing that at this moment in time.

“We know what we need to get in and we know where we want to improve. We believe if we are able to get even two out of the three loan deals through then it would improve us.

“It will likely be next week if any of them are going to happen, but again we’re being dictated to by the parent club.”

Robinson’s immediate focus is on the Scottish Cup though, with St Mirren travelling for their fourth round tie against Queen of the South on Saturday.

The Paisley side defeated the same opposition at home at this stage last season thanks to an Alex Gogic goal and the manager is prepared for another difficult encounter.

“We’ve been a bit up and down: won three, lost four and that’s the league at the minute,” he said. “Teams go on really good runs and really poor runs, so the cup gives you a bit of breathing space from that.

“Every time you go into these competitions it’s an opportunity to progress.

“We’ve got a draw that we believe is a hard draw away from home, but one that we should be good enough to win, if we perform. And we will need to perform to our top levels to do that.

“If we do then we’ll progress in the cup, which is a real exciting prospect.

“I’ve experienced it before in reaching two cup finals with Motherwell. It raises the profile of the club and it raises the profile of individual players. For everybody there’s certainly a real goal for making sure we progress to the next round.”
