Robinson: International call-ups a testament to St Mirren's success

Six St Mirren players have been called up to their international sides this month and that could rise to nine if players out on loan and injured players are included.

Stephen Robinson is delighted that his players are being recognised by their international sides with the club having six players called up by their countries for upcoming matches.

The St Mirren boss says that recognition is testament to how well the club are doing and praised the recruitment team and his coaches for helping them reach that level.

Elvis Bwomono has been called up to the Uganda squad, Jonah Ayunga has been called up to Kenya and Cypriot international Alex Gogic will take part in their upcoming friendlies.

Keanu Baccus has again been included in Graham Arnold’s Australia squad for their World Cup qualifiers while Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neil has called up Coalan Boyd-Munce and Conor McMenamin for their friendlies against Scotland and Romania.

Teenage midfielder Gallagher Lennon, who is currently on loan at Alloa, will captain the Norther Ireland under-19s bringing the number of call-ups to seven.

And if you add Ryan Strain, who is currently injured but is a regular in the Australia squad, and New Zealand international Alex Grieve, who is on loan at Dundee United, then that is potentially nine international players on the books at St Mirren.

That is something that would have been unheard of in recent seasons and Robinson says it shows the club are moving in the right direction and is something that will help them attract new players to the club in the future.

He said: “If we include young Gallagher Lennon with the under-19s then we have seven players called up, which wasn’t happening before. So I think again credit has to go to the staff and the recruitment team at the football club.

“We have recruited players with potential who have started to fulfil that potential, Caolan Boyd-Munce being one of those, Jonah Ayunga, to name but a few, and that recruitment has allowed them to grow and they have grabbed that opportunity.

“St Mirren have given them a platform and what that does is it attracts other players, we’re never going to change anyone’s life with the wages that we pay but what we can do is give them a platform.

“And we can use the players and develop them and we have proved we can do that over time.”

Fourth-placed St Mirren travel to Kilmarnock on Saturday with only one point separating the sides in the Premiership with the Paisley club looking to secure a top-six spot for the second consecutive season.
