Stephen Robinson ‘getting closer’ to strengthening St Mirren squad in January

The Saints boss is keen to add to his injury-hit squad quickly.

Stephen Robinson revealed he is “very close” to adding further to his St Mirren squad as he prepares to host Falkirk on Saturday.

The Saints boss has already recruited former Motherwell midfielder Allan Campbell on a deal for the rest of this campaign, after the 27-year-old left Dundee United at the end of last season.

However, with Jonah Ayunga (tendon), Mark O’Hara (ankle) and Keanu Baccus (hamstring tendon) out for “months”, Robinson is working hard to get the numbers in his squad back up in their bid to climb the table.

The Premier Sports Cup winners are 10th in the William Hill Premiership, four points behind Dundee having played two games fewer, and Robinson said: “The update is the injured players are a week closer, obviously, but the three boys are still months away from being fit. The three of them are long-term injuries.

“We’ve obviously got Allan in. We do need forward players and we already needed one without Jonah’s injury, so we’re looking to recruit two forward players and we’re getting closer to that but whether that’s in time for Saturday, I’m not sure. But we are actively trying to do that at this moment.

“I’m just reading on Sky Sports News, underneath, that clubs are signing people for £3million and £2million so I’m jealous, that’s all I’ll say. Really, really jealous because you’d like to just go ‘bang, there’s the offer’. That’s not the way it works.

“There’s a lot of negotiations, we are looking at free transfers, people out of contract. And, as I say, we believe we’ve got one that’s very close and another one that’s bubbling. It’s in an area that we need more bodies in, more experience and, yeah, it’s frustrating at times.

“You want everything done very quickly but nobody’s rushing to sign. At the moment they’re all looking at their options.”
