St Mirren have spoken to the Scottish FA seeking an explanation as to why the team wasn’t awarded a penalty in the premiership clash with St Johnstone on Saturday.
Bozo Mikulic’s second-half strike gave bottom side St Johnstone a hard-fought 1-0 win over St Mirren and boosted their hopes of William Hill Premiership survival.
However, in the first half, Drew Wright bumped Elvis Bwomono to the ground inside the St Johnstone box to elicit penalty claims from the home players and fans but referee Dan McFarlane awarded a goal kick, a decision confirmed by the VAR.
St Mirren released a statement on Sunday saying they were “disappointed” with the decision, confirming they are seeking talks with the Scottish Football Association’s Referee Department to explain why a penalty kick was not awarded.
They also claimed there has been an “accumulation of errors” made against the club.
A spokesperson said: “St Mirren FC is disappointed with the decision not to award a penalty in the first-half of yesterday’s match against St Johnstone following a foul on Elvis Bwomono.
“A VAR review cleared this decision without requiring the referee to look at the incident on the pitchside monitor. The club has spoken to Scottish Football Association’s Referee Department today seeking clarity on this and other decisions in yesterday’s match.
“Clearly, we are all humans and mistakes will happen. However, there has now been an accumulation of errors made against St Mirren.
“This is hugely disappointing for the club and our supporters, and we will continue to engage with the Scottish FA to improve standards of officiating.”
St Mirren have drawn only three of their 25 league games this season and boss Stephen Robinson said the “inconsistency is incredible”.
He said: “We’ve not drawn anywhere near enough games.
“In a game like that where a team is sitting in and trying to hit you on the counter, then you have to make sure you don’t lose the game.
“And again, we’ve not done that as a group.
“When you’re dominating the game, you don’t concede sloppy goals like we done. There has to be a real desire not to concede. It’s a sloppy, sloppy goal.
“We should come out with the ball. We don’t clear the ball in the first place to lead to the corner, and these mistakes add up.
“And when you make those mistakes, we’re getting punished for all of them at the moment, every mistake we make. Every referee decision, seems to go against us at the moment,
“We’re having to win games by playing right at the top of our game.
“So when we’re not in the top of our game, we’re losing games instead of drawing.
“And it’s certainly a challenge, something that we as a staff, have to help the players with.”
