St Johnstone have announced the signing of Liverpool defender Tony Gallacher on a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old left-back from Glasgow signed for the Anfield club from Falkirk in 2018 but only made one first-team appearance, which came in a League Cup defeat to Aston Villa in 2019.

In 2020 he went out on loan to MLS side Toronto FC but the move was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic and he only played ten games, with everyone played away from home due to travel restrictions in the US.

St Johnstone confirmed on Tuesday that he had joined the McDiarmid Park side, who currently sit bottom of the Premiership, until the summer of 2024.

Gallacher, who was a teenager at Falkirk before making the move to the Merseyside giants, is now excited for the next chapter in his career.

He said: “I had a great time at Liverpool and I’d like to thank everyone there for looking after me and helping me to improve as a footballer and teach me so many good habits.

“I feel very lucky to have been part of a massive football club with so many wonderful professionals and people. It was an incredible education.

“But I felt the time was right to look for first-team football and an exciting opportunity presented itself at St Johnstone.

“Having been out on loan at Toronto, I enjoyed my time there and it made me want more and more first-team football.

“It’s now up to me to show everyone at St Johnstone that I’m good enough to play regular first-team football and that’s what I plan to do.”

He is now turning his attention to helping Callum Davidson turn the season around for last year’s double cup winners.

He said: “It’s vital to win games of football and I am confident we will do that to move away from the bottom end of the table.”
