The organisers of the Six Nations championships have ruled out any invitation to South Africa to join the competition either as an additional team or a replacement for another nation.
It had been reported that there were plans being discussed to ask the Springboks to join the northern hemisphere sides in a revamped tournament. South Africa’s commitment to the Rugby Championship is currently only until 2025 and it was believed that could be the basis of a major change.
That speculation has now been ended by officials, who say they are not in talks about any changes to the format or participants.
“Six Nations Rugby, comprising the six unions and federations and CVC, wish to confirm that they are not entertaining any discussion nor developing any plans to add or replace any participating Union,” a Six Nations statement read.
