Shane Duffy has thanked Celtic fans for their support after he left the club early to return to parent club Brighton.

The Republic of Ireland defender has an injury that rules him out of Celtic’s final two league games and so has returned south before his loan deal officially expires.

Duffy was one of Celtic’s highest profile signings when he arrived last summer but after a promising start he struggled along with his side as the club’s hopes of a landmark season disappeared.

Injuries and form saw Duffy restricted to 18 appearances for the club, though he did lift the Scottish Cup during his time in Glasgow.

The defender posted thanks on Instagram as he left Celtic, saying: “Grateful for the opportunity to get the chance to play for a club that many dream about doing.

“Thanks to the supporters and the players for helping me through a tough year on and off the field. Not many know what goes on behind the scenes .

“Time to hit restart button and get myself sorted. Celtic football club will always have a place in my heart.”
