Sebastian Pocognoli set to be appointed new Scotland head coach

Former Monaco manager Sebastian Pocognoli is set to be appointed new Scotland head coach.

SFA CEO Ian Maxwell and chief football officer Craig Mulholland had been leading the search to appoint Steve Clarke’s successor following his departure in June.

Clarke stood down from his post following a group stage exit from the 2026 World Cup.

STV Sport understands that Pocognoli is set to be appointed as his replacement.

The 39-year-old guided Union Saint-Gilloise to the Belgian league title last year, before moving on to Monaco, who he left in June.

During his playing career, he represented West Brom and spent a season on loan at Brighton.

If appointed, Pocognoli’s first task will be navigating Scotland through the Nations League campaign, which begins in September.

Clarke was hailed as Scotland’s ‘most successful National Team Head Coach’ by the SFA after he announced he was leaving his role.

He led the side to three out of the last four major tournaments, and it was the national team’s first appearance in the World Cup finals since 1998.

However, there has been widespread criticism of Clarke after Scotland failed again to get out of the knockout stages, after finishing bottom of their group at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
