Bosses at Clyde FC say the club is in “serious danger” as a bid to raise £55,000 was launched.
The Scottish League Two side have raised £135,000 including a recent donation of £15,000 from supporters to reduce their financial deficit.
However, the Bully Wee says a credible late intervention to pump funds into the club has fallen through, sparking the need to launch a public fundraiser.
The club, founded in 1877, play at Hamilton Academical’s New Douglas Park and are said to be in “serious danger”, according to club chiefs.
The scale of the financial challenge facing the club was laid out at a board meeting in August when the deficit was estimated to be around £200,000.
Ian Fitzpatrick, marketing director said: “The club is facing the toughest test in our 147-year history. Those primarily responsible for this situation are no longer with the club and the remaining board members have put ourselves up for election at the forthcoming AGM.
“This reflects our commitment to supporters and our determination to resolve this problem. Directors co-opted during this debacle are also standing for election and are sticking with the club they care about.
“As a fan of the club, I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has helped reduce our deficit to date, but we still have a long way to go.”
A post on the GoFundMe page read: “There is never a good time to ask for money, but this is surely the worst. Please give what you can for an historic institution that has been critically damaged.
“The Clyde Football Club, founded in 1877 has weathered many storms, this one is perhaps its toughest test. Please, Back the Bully Wee.”
