A Scottish 20-year-old surfer has taken on the world’s biggest waves at the Nazare Big Wave Challenge in Portugal.

Ben Larg, from Tiree, got the call-up to take part in the invite-only contest after it was green-lit to run earlier this week.

In a video shared to Instagram, the Scot said he was nervous but “delighted” to have gotten the last minute call.

He was teamed up with British big wave surfing pioneer, Andrew Cotton.

“It was kind of my dream to team up with Cotty for the challenge,” he said.

“He’s the guy I’ve been surfing with the most and I’m delighted it’s with him”

At the time of writing, the team sits at third place in the contest.

Larg sits at third in men’s individual leader board after securing a 14.91 score in his first heat, and increasing it to 16.63 in his second.

British surfer Laura Lou Crane made her debut in the contest after becoming the first British woman to surf the world-famous wave earlier this year.

Located in the Oeste region, Nazaré is famed for its massive waves thanks to the underwater canyon located just off shore which funnels incoming swell and increases their height as they reach shallower waters.

Sebastian Steudtner currently holds the Guinness World Record for surfing the biggest wave ever after riding a 93.72 feet (28.6 m) at the Portuguese spot.
