Scots darts player Peter Wright has won his first PDC World Championship title after beating Michael Van Gerwen 7-3 at Alexandra Palace.

The 49-year-old, who lost to Van Gerwen in the 2014 final, denied his world number one opponent a fourth global crown.

Underdog Wright won three successive sets to leave his opponent floundering.

Wright told Sky Sports: “You should never give up. It doesn’t matter how many times you get beaten. All these good players keep coming through, but I’ve done it. I’ve done it.”

Van Gerwen added: “I am really disappointed, everything I missed, every important shot he took out. His finishing was phenomenal. I can only blame myself.

“I had several chances to take the lead and when you don’t take them against a player like Peter Wright you are not going to win.

“I will be back stronger next year.”
