Scotland have been defeated 5-4 on penalties by Finland in the Pinatar Cup final following a 1-1 draw.

The Finns, who beat Slovenia in the semi-final of the four-team tournament in Spain, took the lead in the 21st minute through Oona Sevenius’ back-post header.

The Scots equalised in the 74th minute when Martha Thomas – who scored a double in the semi-final win over the Philippines at the weekend – followed up to force home the rebound after Erin Cuthbert’s free-kick was parried into her path by goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela.

The match went straight to penalties and when Scotland keeper Sandy MacIver saved Finland’s fourth spot-kick, Cuthbert had a chance to win the trophy for Pedro Martinez Losa’s side, only to see her attempt saved by Korpela.

After Sanni Franssi converted the Finns’ sixth penalty, Korpela pulled off another stop to deny Nicola Docherty and consign the Scots, who have now won only one of their last eight matches, to defeat.
