Scotland Under-21s hopes of qualifying for the European Championship finals have ended in disappointment after a 1-0 defeat in Greece.
Scot Gemmill’s side went into their final group match knowing that a win would see them reach the men’s finals for the first time since 1995.
A goal from Efthymios Christopolous in the 27th minute was enough to settle the match though, with Scotland’s efforts to get back into the game coming to nothing.
Victory would have seen the side leapfrog Czech Republic to top the group based on their head-to-head record. The team could even have qualified with a defeat if Croatia failed to beat Lithuania, leaving Scotland as one of the best second-placed teams in qualifying.
However, Croatia cruised to a 7-0 win, meaning Scotland’s wait for a major finals continues.
