Scotland star Ryan Christie has undergone successful surgery on a groin injury.

The former Celtic, Aberdeen and Inverness Caley midfielder is now in doubt for the national team’s upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein at the start of June.

Premier League club Bournemouth, where he currently plays, confirmed the news on Wednesday and said a rehabilitation period will now begin.

The 30-year-old has made 32 appearances for the Cherries this season and helped them to tenth in the English top-flight.

He posted on social media saying: “time to heal”.

AFC Bournemouth said in a statement: “We can confirm that Ryan Christie has undergone a successful surgical procedure following an injury he has been monitoring this season.

“The midfielder was assessed by club staff after coming off during the match against Ipswich Town last week.

“It was decided that surgery would be the best course of action for Ryan’s recovery and he will return to the club’s Performance Centre to begin a process of rehabilitation.

“The club’s medical and performance staff will now work alongside Ryan throughout his recovery, with the full support of everyone at AFC Bournemouth.”

Scotland’s next competitive game is not until September when they will take on Denmark and Belarus in back-to-back away games in World Cup qualifying.

Christie has 59 caps and seven goals for the national team.
