A young member of the Tartan Army who will be going to the World Cup will be taking along an iconic kilt that was supposed to go to the tournament 30 years ago.
Stephen Reside, who met Scottish goalkeeper Andy Goram when he was young, will be taking his kilt to the States.
It was supposed to be the legendary goalkeeper’s World Cup uniform, but he ended up walking out of the squad 15 days before Scotland were due to play Brazil at France 98.
STV NewsStephen says the kilt will also be auctioned to raise funds for the Scotland Cerebral Palsy football team.
He told STV News: “It’s an absolute honour to be taking this kilt here that Andy Goram, one of the greatest goalkeepers that this country has ever produced, would have been wearing, and to be finally taking it into a World Cup.
“I mean, I’m just a fan who is lucky enough to be going to the World Cup anyway, but to have this added in and for it to be going to be used for funds for Cerebral Palsy Scotland is quite surreal.”
STV NewsAshley Reid from Scottish ParaFootball said: “It’s a wonderful thing that Stephen is choosing to do, and to auction off the kilt to raise money.
“I think it also puts a spotlight on the fact that there is a huge lack of investment in disability football and we hope that this will put a spotlight on that and raise awareness of the fact that these teams are having to self-fund to get to major tournaments, and we would like that to change.”
