Scotland’s bid to win a record fifth successive Calcutta Cup over England fell short at Twickenham in a 16-15 defeat.
The Scots historic run of success in the fixture – four wins in a row and holding the cup for seven of the last eight years – was halted on Saturday in a Six Nations showdown.
Tries for Ben White and Huw Jones give Scotland a 10-7 half-time lead, with Duhan Van der Merwe causing the England defence all sorts of bother.
Tommy Freeman notched up a try for the hosts at Twickenham before Marcus Smith levelled before the hour mark with a kick.
Smith was on hand again as England took the lead with just over ten to play before a Fin Smith penalty gave the hosts breathing room at 16-10.
Van der Merwe scored a try to give Scotland hope in the dying moments but Finn Russell missed the kick to give Gregor Townsend’s men the lead.
It was heartbreak in the end for Scotland, who failed to secure the record of a fifth successive Calcutta Cup in a row.
