Scotland defender Aaron Hickey has suffered another huge injury blow after being ruled out for the majority of the season.

The Brentford full-back missed out on Euro 2024 after having surgery on a hamstring injury back in April and had been working his way back to fitness at the English Premier League side.

The club has now revealed that Hickey suffered a setback in training last week and a fresh operation will see the 22-year-old sidelined for months.

Brentford’s head physio Nick Stubbings said on the Premier League club’s website: “The procedure involved the removal of the previous repair sutures and making a new tendon repair.

“Now we aim to start afresh and help Aaron return to his previous level of health and performance.”

The absence of Hickey and fellow right-back Nathan Patterson was a significant issue for Scotland manager Steve Clarke to deal with at the Euros and he is deprived of both for September’s Nations League double-header against Poland and Portugal.

Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston and Sturm Graz defender Max Johnston have been called up but Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, who has been linked with Scotland, is part of England’s squad to face Republic of Ireland and Finland.
