Rodgers: Celtic aiming to sprint over finishing line after derby win

Celtic now only need one more point to clinch the their third Premiership title in a row.

Brendan Rodgers insisted he wants his side to sprint over the finishing after all-but guaranteeing another title win with a win over Rangers.

The Hoops are now six points clear with only two games remaining following a 2-1 victory against their city rivals on Saturday.

Matt O’Riley opened the scoring before John Lundstram turned the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 in the first half.

Cyriel Dessers pulled one back for Rangers before Lundstram was sent off to reduce the visitors to ten men.

Celtic dominated most of the second half but had to survive a few nervy moments late on to seal all three-points that leaves them with one had on the trophy.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers said: “It’s a significant win, that was the aim, we knew if we could get the win and add to the goal difference that it would be a great day for us and that’s how it ended up.

“But we still have work to do, we are not over the finishing line yet, with two games to go and six points ahead it is a pretty good to place to be, so it’s a massive win and a great day for the supporters.

“We don’t just want to cross the finishing line, we want to sprint over it. We have two games to go plus a final and that is our mentality.”

The Celtic boss also hit out at critics who questioned his commitment to the club after their shaky spells in December and February.

He said: “I heard somebody say about Brendan Rodgers going through the motions, earlier on in the season.

“I get to work between 7.30am and 8am every day and I leave the training ground between 6.30pm and 7pm and then when I get home I have my dinner then flip open my computer and watch more football.

“So if that is going through the motions then I want to know what every manager is doing, so from a personal level I have treated like a novice and like it is my first job.

“However, my principle objective is to make sure that Celtic win, part of that is part of part of the criticism but it is the mentality of the team that is most important.”
