Rangers takeover: What we know as US consortium take Ibrox tour

Health tycoon Andrew Cavanagh and Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe were at Ibrox on Tuesday.

The US-based consortium poised to take over Rangers Football Club took a tour of Ibrox Stadium on Tuesday.

Big changes are mooted for the Premiership club this summer following a disappointing season that left them trophyless.

Health tycoon Andrew Cavanagh is set to take on a controlling stake alongside 49ers Enterprise, who also run Leeds United.

It emerged in February that they have been in discussions with the current board since late last year.

We take a look at what we know so far regarding the takeover.

Who is involved?

Andrew Cavenagh is the owner of a US based insurance firm. He first visited Ibrox for a game against St Johnstone in January and has been a regular at their games since.

Paraag Marathe, the current Leeds United chairman and head of investment for the San Francisco 49ers American football franchise, was with the group at Ibrox.

Leeds technical director Gretar Steinsson also appeared to be among the consortium, which was being shown around Ibrox by Rangers chairman Patrick Stewart.

When are they likely to take over?

The investors have been in talks with the Ibrox club since 2024 and their intentions to become majority shareholders was revealed in February.

The buyout would see 51% of the club acquired by the American consortium, and parties hope to complete the deal before the end of the season or during the summer, STV News understands.

What is on the agenda?

The first task for the incoming consortium will likely be securing a new manager to take the club into next season.

Barry Ferguson has been in the dugout on an interim basis since Philippe Clement was sacked earlier this year.

However, mixed results for the former captain, including a current run of five games without a win and conceding at least two goals every league game, means it is unlikely he will be considered for a permanent role.

Rangers statement:

A statement from the club last week read: “Rangers and its existing controlling shareholders are in productive conversations with the two lead members of the Consortium, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group, about the potential for the Consortium to acquire control of the club and to inject additional capital.

“These discussions reflect a shared recognition of the importance of Rangers FC’s long-term direction, ambitions and management.”
