Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Portuguese striker was stretchered off during Rangers’ defeat to Hibs on Sunday after his efforts to keep the ball alive on the goal-line ended with him clattering into an advertising board behind the goal.

Following an assessment, his club have now confirmed he will be injured for a “significant period of time”.

A statement read: “Following assessment, striker Youssef Chermiti suffered an ACL injury in Sunday’s match with Hibernian. Youssef will be out of action for a significant period of time.

“Everyone at Rangers is with him as he begins his recovery.”

It comes after the club turned down a bid from Galatasaray for the striker.

Chermiti moved to Ibrox in a deal understood to be worth £8m last summer.

He has made 43 Rangers appearances, 30 of them starts, scoring 15 goals.
