Rangers have qualified directly for the last 16 of the Europa League after defeating Union Saint-Gilloise 2-1 in their final League Phase match.
Philippe Clement’s side earned the three points they needed and results elsewhere meant they climbed into the top eight of the league and will avoid the play-off round.
The hosts took the lead through a header from Nico Raskin after 20 minutes and doubled their advantage when Vaclav Cerny finished neatly after a Cyriel Dessers cutback.
Union pushed to get back into the game and scored through Kevin McAllister after 83 minutes to set up a nervy finish but Rangers saw the game out.
Results elsewhere confirmed they had taken a place in the top eight of the league table and they will now avoid next month’s play-off round and return to action in the last 16 in March.
The Ibrox side already have some idea of who they could be facing. They are in the bracket to take on one of Fenerbahce, Twente, Anderlecht or Bodo/Glimt, depending on the play-off draw and results.
