Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes has joined Brazilian side Cruzeiro on a 12-month loan deal.

The Serie A club have an option to buy the 24-year-old Ecuador international after the year-long loan comes to an end.

Cifuentes has made 20 appearances for Rangers since his summer move from LAFC.

But he has struggled for consistency in Scotland and has found himself down the pecking order of midfield options under Philippe Clement.

He was sent off in his last league appearance that came in a 3-1 win over Dundee at the start of December.

His last game for Rangers came in the 3-2 win over Real Betis that secured a last-16 place in the Europa League.

The Ibrox side confirmed the move on Wednesday.

A statement said: “We can today confirm that Jose Cifuentes has joined Cruzeiro on loan with an option to buy, subject to international clearance.

“The midfielder has joined the Brazilian Serie A side for a 12-month period.

“Everyone at Rangers wishes Jose all the best for his loan.”

The midfielder signed a four-year-deal at Rangers when he was signed by former manager Michael Beale for around £1m in August.
