Irving and Barron join Scotland squad as Gilmour, McCrorie and Miller ruled out

The squad are heading to Turkey to train ahead of two huge qualifiers.

Rangers midfielder Connor Barron and West Ham‘s Andy Irving have been called up to the Scotland squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Denmark.

The pair replace injured duo Lennon Miller and Ross McCrorie, while Billy Gilmour has been ruled out of the Greece game.

Steve Clarke’s squad fly out to Turkey for warm weather training ahead of two huge games for the national team and the pair were pictured leaving the team hotel with the rest of the squad.

Scotland currently sit second in their qualifying group behind the Danes on goal difference.

A positive result on Saturday against Greece on Athens would set up a head-to-head with Denmark at Hampden where a win would see Scotland qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Clarke had injury problems to contend with as he made his selection for the qualifiers. Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Angus Gunn has a knee injury, with Falkirk’s Scott Bain called up as a replacement.

Max Johnston misses out with a hamstring issue allowing Josh Doig and Ross McCrorie to come into the group. Lawrence Shankland has also been called up after a strong start to the season with Hearts.

Five Serie A-based players were originally called up but Miller has pulled out and Gilmour won’t travel to Turkey and will miss the Greece game as he recovers from injury. The Napoli midfielder could still be available for the match against Denmark next Tuesday.

Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson and Josh Doig are understood to be travelling directly to Turkey.
