Rangers have made a formal approach to begin talks with Hearts boss Derek McInnes regarding the manager position at Ibrox, STV Sport understands.
Current Gers boss, Danny Rohl, is believed to be on the verge of taking over at Austrian giants RB Salzburg.
The Ibrox higher ups have identified former player McInnes as the candidate to replace the German coach who was hired in October.
It is understood that the Jambos will not stand in the way of McInnes if he wants to depart the club he led to second place last season.
Rangers would part with a high six figure compensation fee if a deal is agreed with 54-year-old.
McInnes would be reunited ex-Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland at Ibrox after the talismanic striker arrived in Glasgow for free.
