Rabbi Matondo has left Rangers to join Hannover 96 on loan until the end of the season, with the German club holding an option to make the move permanent.

The winger emerged as a signing target for the Bundesliga 2 side ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline and talks had been ongoing over a deal to see Matondo play in Germany for the remainder of the season. That’s now come to fruition and the player may have made his last appearance for Rangers.

A club statement read: “Rangers can today confirm that Rabbi Matondo has joined German side Hannover 96 on loan, subject to international clearance.

“The winger, who signed for Rangers in the summer of 2022, will spend the remainder of the campaign with the Bundesliga 2 side, with an option to make the move permanent.

“Everyone at Rangers wishes Rabbi all the best for his loan.”

Matondo hasn’t featured much for Philippe Clement’s side this season. A hamstring injury ruled him out for three months earlier in the campaign and he has made just eight appearances, scoring twice.

Rangers came to the decision to let the 24-year-old move in this window and Hannover are keen for him to help them in their promotion bid as they currently sit fifth in the table.

Matondo came through Manchester City’s development programme but began his senior career in Germany with Schalke 04. He had loan spells with both Stoke City and Cercle Brugge before moving to Ibrox in 2022.

In his two-and-a-half seasons in Glasgow, the Welsh international has played 67 times for Rangers, scoring eight times and contributing 12 assists.
