Barry Ferguson’s spell as Rangers interim manager has started with a win after his side came through a turbulent 90 minutes with all three points following a comeback victory over Kilmarnock.
The Ibrox side recovered from a horror start at Rugby Park to beat Derek McInnes’ men 4-2 in the Premiership on Wednesday night.
Former captain Ferguson was joined in the dugout by the new-look coaching staff of Neil McCann, Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds and Issame Charai as he took charge of his first game since replacing sacked Philippe Clement until the end of the season.
But it was Killie who found themselves two goals ahead within the first 15 minutes when Joe Wright and Brad Lyons both scored to hand the new Rangers management team off to the worst possible start in Ayrshire.
However, Vaclav Cerny got one back for Rangers after 30 minutes, and Cyriel Dessers equalised early in the second half.
The Nigeria forward completed the comeback with his second of the match on the hour mark when he struck a sweet volley past Kilmarnock goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara and Nedim Bajrami made sure the three points would be heading back to Ibrox with five minutes to go.
Wright scored the opening goal from a header on the 10th minute when he rose highest at a corner to make it 1-0.
Then just four minutes later Wright capitalised on a mix up in the Rangers defence before sending a curling effort past Jack Butland to make it 2-0.
Killie almost made it three midway through the first half when Marley Watkins was played through on goal, but Butland made a good save to send the ball wide.
It was one-way traffic at this point with Killie piling pressure on as they looked to increase their lead even further and potentially put the game out of sight.
The Rangers interim manager turned to his bench with just half an hour of the game gone and replaced Clinton Nsiala with Ridvan Yilmaz.
The change nearly had an instant impact with the visitors coming close to getting themselves back in it, but Wright cleared off the line from Dessers.
However, they got their goal just two minutes later when Cerny burst through the defence before slotting past O’Hara to make it 2-1.
Rangers remained a goal behind going into the break and they got themselves level less than ten minutes after the restart.
Dessers headed a James Tavernier corner past O’Hara to make it 2-2 on the 53rd minute before scoring a volley to make it 3-2 ten minutes later.
It was now Kilmarnock who were searching for an equaliser and Corrie Ndaba forced a good save from Butland with a well-struck effort from distance.
Rangers burst up the park just moments later and Hamza Igamane came close to putting the game to bed with a long-range strike of his own that was batted wide by O’Hara.
Bajrami sealed the win on the 85th minute when he finished off a quick counter-attack to make it 3-2.
Second-placed Rangers are 13-points behind league leaders Celtic and 18 ahead of third-placed Aberdeen in the Premiership.
It will be Motherwell at Ibrox up next for Ferguson and co this weekend with Kilmarnock facing a trip to Dingwall to take on Ross County as they look to get their top-six challenge back on track.
