Rangers are set to be without Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane against Panathinaikos after both failed to train the day before the team’s crucial Champions League match.

The Ibrox side trained on Tuesday morning ahead of their flight to Athens, where they hope to build on a 2-0 lead from the first leg and secure progress to the third qualifying round of the competition.

Head coach Russell Martin said at the weekend that he hoped to have both Aasgaard and Igamane fit and available for the decisive game on Wednesday night but both were absent from Tuesday’s session and appear to have lost the fight to be ready.

Summer signing Aasgaard had picked up an injury in pre-season against Dunfermline and was rated as being close to fitness for last week’s first leg at Ibrox but didn’t make the matchday squad and it appears he is still struggling.

Igamane came off the bench against Panathinakos but picked up a knock and was left out of Saturday’s friendly against Middlesbrough.

Martin had explained that the Moroccan striker, who has been linked with a move away from Glasgow this summer, had suffered a disrupted pre-season after visa issues delayed his return to the squad but had worked his way into a good condition. However, he thought it would be “madness” to risk the forward in a friendly.

Rangers travel to the Greek capital in a confident mood after the home win and hope to build on the momentum from their first competitive match.

Martin is expected to give a full update on player fitness and his plans for the match when he faces the media on Tuesday evening.
