Rangers boss Danny Rohl has urged the club to act decisively in the transfer market and be “brave and bold” in January.
Rohl saw his side climb to third in the table with a 1-0 win over Motherwell on Saturday after Thelo Aasgaard scored the only goal of the game and is targeting further progress between now and the end of the season.
Key to that ambition will be the club’s recruitment when the transfer window opens next week.
The German only arrived as Russell Martin’s permanent replacement in late October, and Rangers have since parted ways with head of recruitment Kevin Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart.
That’s meant Rohl has been talking directly with chairman Andrew Cavenagh about what he needs to improve his squad and the manager believes decisiveness is key.
“I had a good meeting with Andrew this morning,” Rohl said after the win over Motherwell.
“We very clear. I think there’s one guideline for me off the pitch, brave and bold decisions.
“I think this is key to how we have to act.
“If you are convinced in the board and in the club then we should go all in and try it and if not then we should say no. I think this is very clear for me.
“It should be not something between maybe or maybe not. It’s a no or a yes, not between, this is what I want to see from myself but also from us as a club, that we are brave enough to make strong decisions.”
In the meantime, Rohl will work with the squad he inherited and he believes a lack of ruthlessness made Saturday’s win closer than it should have been.
“I’m not looking too much to the data but if you have 28 shots, a lot of big opportunities, three against one, four against one situations, you have to close the game,” he said.
Defeated Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou was satisfied with his side’s overall performance but bewildered by a second half incident when Lukas Fadinger went down after a challenge from Emmanuel Fernandez. Match official David Dickinson didn’t award a penalty and wasn’t invited to review the call by VAR.
“Both goalkeepers needed to pull out one hell of a performance to make it a game of just one goal,” Askou said.
“Then there’s something that I will take with me into my grave, not understanding how we don’t get a penalty at the end.
“He clearly tripped Lukas going free on an open goal.
“That is unacceptable and probably another of these where we get an excuse in a couple of weeks.
“But we can’t dwell on it, because in three days we have another big game and we have to get ready to deliver another one of these similar performances.”
