Danny Rohl: It’s not impossible for Rangers to catch up with top two

Rohl won't rule his side out of the Premiership title race despite a nine-point gap to the top.

Rangers boss Danny Rohl says its not impossible for team to catch Celtic and Hearts in Premiership title raceSNS Group

Danny Rohl insists it is “not impossible” for Rangers to catch Hearts and Celtic as he looks to take advantage of the William Hill Premiership top two clash this weekend.

Nedim Bajrami’s last-gasp penalty gave the Light Blues a 2-2 draw against Dundee United at Tannadice on Wednesday night.

However, it was a second successive draw in the league for the Ibrox men and it left them in fourth place, nine points behind the league-leading Jambos and reigning champions Celtic, who face off at Parkhead on Sunday, with Rangers travelling to Kilmarnock on Saturday night.

While it is expected that the Gers boss will bolster his squad when the January transfer window opens, he is confident that Rangers can chase down the top two, starting this weekend.

“Not just to January (keeping in touch with leaders), I think, in general, close the gap,” said the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

“Of course, the last two draws opens the gap a little bit. But if we win tomorrow, we will be just six points behind because the two teams ahead of us have to play against each other and not both can win.

“And then we have all the games in our hand. It is a long way but it’s not impossible.”

Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore, who has been out of action with a muscle problem since scoring in the 3-0 win at Dundee on November 9, is back in contention, while defender John Souttar, also out since the Dundee game with a muscle injury, is likely to remain out until the away game against Celtic on January 3.

While Moore may come into the squad for the trip to Ayrshire, Dujon Sterling drops out.

The utility player has returned to the bench in recent games after recovering from a long-term Achilles problem but will not be risked on Killie’s artificial surface.

Rohl said: “Mikey trained with us today, and if there’s no reaction he’ll be back tomorrow in the squad. This is good news.

“Dujon is not available for the game because of the pitch. We have to be careful and all the others (absentees) are still the same.

“I think he (Moore) showed, especially in the Dundee game when he scored, which skills he has, especially between the lines. I think that was maybe one of the best games from him.

“I see him more inside instead of just in the right-sided areas. He gives us moments between the lines, you can have good decision-making, good finishing.

“Of course, after injury, you have to bring him back step by step, but still, today in the small sided games he showed what he can do, and that’s good news for us, especially for the upcoming games.

“John Souttar, maybe around the Celtic game which is still three, four weeks away. He starts next week on the grass which is a good step forward and we will see week by week.”
