Corsie wants Scotland to use Nations League disappointment as motivation

Pedro Martinez Losa's side finished bottom of their group with just two points from six games.

Rachel Corsie believes Scotland Women’s chastening Nations League campaign can help with their bid to reach next year’s European Championship.

The Scots failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup and the previous Euros and in their inaugural Nations League campaign last year they found themselves in League A Group 1 with England, Netherlands and Belgium.

Pedro Martinez Losa’s side finished bottom with just two points garnered in draws against Belgium and suffered a 6-0 defeat by the Auld Enemy and 4-0 drubbing by the Dutch in their relegation to League B.

The Scotland captain, however, is in confident mood ahead of their Euro qualification campaign which starts against Serbia away on Friday and Slovakia at home next Tuesday – Israel are also in the group – as they bid to secure a place in Switzerland next summer.

Aston Villa defender Corsie said: “Everyone is really excited. We are in a good place.

“Obviously at the end of last year we had a lot of tough games but also we wanted to be in pot A to experience that, play competitive fixtures against tough nations and the performances were good and some of the results weren’t as good as we would have wanted but we had to feel that challenge to understand where we are and where we want to get to.

“I think it is exciting to come in to this group and know this is now the competitive games that start the Euro qualifying.

“These are tough fixtures but that is exciting and we feel if we perform well we can get good results.

“There is a little bit of pressure. Obviously we are disappointed with the World Cup campaign and the Euros before that although that feels like a long time ago.

“We just really want to be there at the Euros. It feels like a little while since we have had this pressure and this feeling of we are trying to qualify for a major tournament and I think everyone is ready.”
