Rangers have been dumped out of the Scottish Cup after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Queen’s Park.

The Premiership side were rocked by a 69th minute goal by Seb Drozd but had a chance to level from the spot when awarded a penalty in the sixth minute of added time.

James Tavernier’s spot-kick was dramatically saved by goalkeeper Callum Ferrie though and Queen’s Park progressed to the last eight of the competition for the first time since the 1982/83 season.

The result piles pressure on Rangers manager Philippe Clement, whose side were beaten finalists in the League Cup this season and currently trail Celtic by 13 points in the Premiership. The team were booed as they left the park after a poor performance against opposition from a division below.

Clement had made a number of changes to the side that had swept Ross County aside in a 4-0 home win a week ago.

Liam Kelly replaced Jack Butland in goal, whilst Rafael Fernandes was handed his debut after arriving on loan from Lille.

Robin Propper and Nedim Bajrami came into the side, and teenage midfielder Bailey Rice was handed a first start after some impressive performances off the bench.

Rangers enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half, and created numerous chances, but lacked a killer touch and were disappointed to go in at the break without a goal.

Clement made two changes at half-time, bringing on striker Cyriel Dessers and midfielder Nicolas Raskin for Rice and Nedim Bajrami. Hamza Igamane had two good chances but Queen’s Park, who had mostly been forced on to the back foot, had an opportunity when Ryan Duncan’s cross was close to being converted by Kyle Hurst.

The visitors took their next chance when it came. Drodz, who had come off the bench only minutes earlier, collected the ball after a corner and beat Jefte before sliding a low shot past Kelly from a narrow angle.

Rangers threw everything at a stubborn Queen’s Park defence and had a chance to escape a dismal fate when awarded a penalty deep ininjury time.

Tavernier took responsibility from the spot but Ferrie dived to save the goalbound effort to thwart the Rangers skipper.

The goalkeeper then tipped over another goalbound effort and Rangers couldn’t find a goal before the final whistle confirmed their exit from the competition.
