A police investigation has been launched into “possible financial irregularities” at St Mirren Football Club.

The Paisley club said in a statement it will co-operate fully in “all aspects of the process and with all relevant authorities”.

St Mirren said several historic issues were highlighted following an annual audit process.

Chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick said: “The club has taken these steps to ensure that we continue to operate on a sound and compliant financial basis.

“Fans can be confident that all actions taken are in the best interest of St Mirren to ensure it continues to be a club of which our supporters can be proud.”

The club statement added St Mirren remains in a “healthy and robust financial position” and has continued to operate strongly during the coronavirus pandemic.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We’re investigating a report of possible financial irregularities involving a football club in the Paisley area. Enquiries are at an early stage.”
