Clement urges Rangers players to have 'night to remember' against Spurs

The Rangers boss says upsetting the odds can make for lifelong memories.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has urged his players to seize the opportunity for a famous victory over Spurs on Thursday.

The sides meet at Ibrox in the Europa League with the hosts clear underdogs against their English Premier League opposition.

Ange Postecoglou will bring a side including players like Son, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison as Tottenham look to end a disappointing run of results with a vital win.

Clement knows that his side are underdogs going into the game but he says he is “convinced” that a positive result is possible.

“It’s a big challenge but that’s what we like,” he said. “That’s what we love and what we want here.

“Already in the past year we’ve had a few really good opponents here on European nights. This club has a big history in that.

“For the players these are really challenging and nice evenings where they can write history.”

The Belgian stressed that the memory of big victories could last a lifetime and that the players should do everything they can to achieve a notable success together.

“As a player and as a manager there have been several of those nights where the gap was amazingly big,” Clement said. “Those are also the best nights if you then perform and get the result.

“Those are the nights you remember the rest of your life. And they are the moments that as a player you remember your teammates really well. The times of success and doing something special.”

The former player recalled a famous night from his own career when he played in midfield for Brugge and helped them to one of their most celebrated results in 2003.

“With my own memories, I don’t want to look too old, because you’re going to look up how long it was ago,” he said. But for example, with Bruges winning in the Champions League in AC Milan 0-1.

“That was the team that the year before won the Champions League with Dida, Cafu, Costacurta, Maldini, Seedoff, Shevchenko, Inzaghi, and a few really good guys on the bench also. So that was a really special evening.

“If we meet each other, and it doesn’t happen so much, people still talk about that evening together. So I had a few of those. Rangers has also several of those in the history, and those are the special evenings. So it’s a really nice stage for my players.

“If you speak about the past, going with Brugge to Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain and getting results there was also a huge difference. So no, I want this mentality that they fight from the first second until the last second to get the result and to believe in that also. And I believe also that this team has the quality to do that.”
