Scottish football’s top division is set to break its record for attendance figures in a single season as a thrilling title race reaches its climax.
With the race for the SPFL title set to go down to the wire, more than four million fans will attend William Hill Premiership matches in a single season for the first time.
If 98,935 fans attend Wednesday night’s three games – Hearts v Falkirk, Motherwell v Celtic, and Rangers v Hibs – and the final matches across the top six and bottom six this weekend, then the previous top-flight record of 3,986,145 set last season would be surpassed.
Hearts, who haven’t won a title since 1960, remain one point ahead at the top of the table heading into the final two matches, with a title decider at Parkhead on the final day on Saturday a huge possibility.
The average attendance per round in this season’s William Hill Premiership currently stands at 107,521.
It comes after a UEFA report published in September revealed that Scottish football’s top division has the highest attendance per capita in Europe.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL group chief executive, said: “It’s been an incredible William Hill Premiership season so far, and it’s amazing to see that reflected in rising attendances across the country.
“This season’s top-flight has truly captured the attention of fans in Scotland and beyond, and supporters play a vital role in making our game so compelling.
“We’d like to thank fans for their incredible loyalty as we look ahead to some huge matches tonight and this weekend in front of packed stadiums, and we wish all clubs across the division the very best for these important games.”
